Merzouga and the dunes of Erg Chebbi
Merzouga Is a small village, located in the south of the Sahara, is only 50 kilometers from the border with Algeria and is about 30 kilometers from Rissani and about 80 kilometers from Erfoud. It is located in the south of Morocco in the Tafilalet region.
It is a place where the magic and charm of the Berber world unite. Its inhabitants are considered more Berber than Moroccans, although they are Muslim, some wonder why the Koran was not written in Berber.
From anywhere in Merzouga you can see the wonderful sand dunes of Erg Chebbi, an exciting place in the Sahara. This dune field has an area of 35 square kilometers, golden sands mixed with some other palm grove, and in it you can discover unimaginable natural wonders and enjoy the sunsets and sunrises in the most beautiful dunes you have ever been able to imagine.
Near Merzouga are two lakes Dayet Srij, which is the largest lake in Merzouga and Yasmina, which is a little further north and is smaller. Incredible as it may seem these desert lakes generate a unique and surprising fauna. Desert foxes, waterfowl, reptiles and insects, forming an ecosystem worthy of admiration.
